Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Walking With Honor?

Walking With Honor is a nonprofit that pairs shelter and rescue dogs with veterans by training those dogs to become reliable service dogs and supportive partners—changing lives on both ends of the leash.

2. Who do you serve?

We serve military veterans who could benefit from a trained service dog—especially those navigating challenges like PTSD, MST, TBI, and/or needing mobility support.

3. Where are you located, and what areas do you serve?

Walking With Honor is based in New Hampshire, and we serve veterans across the state (and will expand as our program grows).

4. Are your dogs shelter/rescue dogs?

Yes—always. Our mission is built on shelter-to-service, giving deserving dogs a second chance while giving veterans a life-changing partner.

5. What kinds of dogs do you use?

We work with many breeds and mixes. We focus on temperament, health, and trainability—not a specific breed.

6. What makes a dog a good fit for your program?

We look for dogs who show strong potential for service work: stable temperament, people focus, resilience, confidence, and the ability to learn and enjoy training.

7. What training do the dogs receive?

Dogs in our program are trained in public access skills, advanced obedience, task work, and real-life reliability—so they can support veterans safely and consistently in daily life.

8. How long does training take?

Training timelines vary because every dog is different. We focus on doing it right, not rushing it—building solid foundations and real-world reliability.

9. How can a veteran apply?

Veterans can apply directly through our Veteran Application on the website. Once submitted, we’ll reach out with next steps and begin the screening/matching process.

10. Does it cost the veteran anything?

Our mission is to provide trained service dogs free of charge to veterans. Fundraising and donations help make that possible.

11. How do you match a dog with a veteran?

Matching is based on the veteran’s needs, lifestyle, environment, and goals—plus the dog’s temperament and strengths. We’re building a true team, not just placing a dog.

12. Can I volunteer with Walking With Honor?

Yes! We have volunteer roles that support training, dog care, events, outreach, and behind-the-scenes help. Check our Volunteer page to see current openings and apply.

13. How can I donate or sponsor a dog?

You can donate through our website, sponsor supplies, support training costs, or partner with us as a business sponsor. Every dollar helps move a team forward.

14. How can rescues/shelters partner with Walking With Honor?

We love rescue partners. If you’re a shelter or rescue interested in placing dogs into a service dog training pathway, reach out through our Partnership page so we can connect.

15. How can an organization partner with Walking With Honor?

We’re always open to mission-aligned partnerships with veteran groups, businesses, community organizations, and nonprofits. If your organization wants to collaborate, sponsor a dog/team, host a fundraiser, donate services, or support our program in another way, please reach out through our Partnership page (or contact us directly) and we’ll set up a time to connect.
